Dinosaurs Arose at Least 10 Million Years Earlier Than Thought
2010-03-03 16:13:33
Scientists have discovered 243-million-year-old fossils of dinosaurs' closest relatives, pushing back the origin of dinosaurs by at least 10 million years.
The dinosaur-like creature, Asilisaurus kongwe, was about the size of a Labrador retriever and had teeth and jawbones ideally shaped for eating plants, indicating it ate a mostly vegetarian diet.
"This shows that the lineage leading to dinosaurs goes a lot further back in time than we thought. The second thing is that it shows that there's this real ecological diversity," said paleontologist Randy Irmis, co-author of the study appearing Mar. 3 in Nature. "No one thought that the closest relatives to dinosaurs were these four-legged, herbivorous animals. We thought they were small carnivores."

Sometimes "Spring Heeled Jack" pops up in literature-sometimes as a villain, sometimes as a hero-perhaps even an early ancestor of modern superheroes. The strange bit is the fact that Spring Heeled Jack is based on real events and a real person from Victorian era England who purportedly leapt over walls and onto rooftops easily, assaulted men, accosted women, blew gouts of flame from his mouth, and always eluded capture while laughing with mad mirth.

The Metabolic Syndrome in Older Adults
2010-03-02 10:22:09
A growing epidemic among older adults is metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of morbidities that can lead to marked disability, major cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and death. Criteria for the determining the presence of MetS include at least three of the following factors: abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, smoking and testosterone imbalance. Prevention of MetS focuses on eating less and exercising more. Nurses are expected to be role models of health and wellness as they use evidence-based best practices to counsel older persons to have a healthy lifestyle.
